Utilising the Landscape …
Wychavon District Council met with Jupiter Play at the Saltex exhibition where they discussed their project with our in-house Landscape Architect. They were keen to make the most of a slope near an existing play space, which they believed would be ideal for an embankment slide. But due to its south-facing prospect, this would be unsuitable and unsafe on sunnier days. There was also the question around the sensitivity of the site being on the boundary of a scheduled ancient monument site.

 The Design Rationale

The design team didn’t want to miss out on maximising the play opportunity of the sloped area, so came up with burying the slide and creating a climbing labyrinth over the top. This meant the slide would be safe to use and also create more interest as it’s an unusual design idea. By working with the landscape, using FHS Robinia timber and hiding man-made materials (steel slide) underground it softened the space and also meant it had the right fit with the protected SAM area.

The Outcome

The play space has been so popular that after the installation was complete the area was extended further to include more activities to cope with the increased visitor numbers. This project has showcased when designing in harmony and utilising the landscape can lead to more creative and innovative design solutions.
