Jupiter Play was consulted with early on in the Anchorsholme Park project and worked alongside the client to create a mood board that explored ideas for the space and could be used to consult with the public.
The Riverdance Ferry provided the inspiration for an inclusive feature unit. In 2008, the Riverdance Ferry was hit by a wave and ran aground on the North Beach opposite Anchorsholme Lane. Jupiter designed the ship to reflect the wreck; using rust coloured posts and removing the bottom “hull” section.

We worked closely with our partner Galopin, and using our Inclusion expertise we adapted their product to be both wheelchair accessible and challenging.

The initial idea was to zone the space according to age and consider the best locations for the seating area. The United Utilities logo was used as inspiration for the main pathway and created a flow through the space. Each area then developed a theme which merged together to tell the story of the Riverdance Ferry crash. There’s a new cafe, outdoor seating areas, sona play arch (nicknamed ‘our orange arch‘), music and a performing arts space for events and activities. The new playground is fully inclusive for all children.

Cllr Paul Galley and Cllr Tony Williams are the local Ward Councillors. They said: “After so much hard work by so many we’re delighted that we can now enjoy the park and its amazing facilities. Including an incredible play area, great cafe and in time (as lockdown allows) the use of the sports areas and amphitheatre. Anchorsholme once more has a park that can be used and enjoyed by all the community. It’s a feature we can all be proud of.”
