The Facts
Did you know that 1 in 6 deaths are caused by inactivity? Inactivity among over 55s is responsible for as many deaths as smoking. In a modern generation where image and social media makes us more accessible there is also more pressure on young people than ever before, with Childline reporting a significant increase in calls relating to suicide and self-harm.
The research tells us that being active is the best way to improve health, fitness, self-esteem, lowering stress and improving concentration and academic scores. Yet there is still so much to do to ensure that the 1 in 4 of us who do less than 30 minutes of physical activity a week.
Building an Active Nation
There is a huge proportion of our society that have no, or little interest in sports and it is up to us as designers to find solutions that will still encourage our entire community to lead more physically active lifestyles. Gyms and MUGA’s are a great solution, but we believe these are ingredients to providing a successful active community space that the entire community will connect with.
