The Beecraigs project was a historical one for us at Jupiter Play: with both Managing Director, Michael, and Senior Designer, Anne, having worked on the project in the past to provide natural timer play equipment that paired well with the sites setting. However, after 13 years, the original pine equipment had served its purpose and required a more durable replacement pieces of equipment.
This formed the basis of West Lothian Council’s tender: to replace the existing unit with a unique, robust, and durable timber multi-play unit, along with a selection of other complimenting pieces around the site. Jupiter Play formed the perfect partner for this, with our market-leading FHS Robinia, bespoke capability, and design approach.
Our concept centred around creating a character for the play area through bespoke carvings and playable elements, whilst also creating a space that lived up to its name through a bee-themed bespoke unit. Our team ensured that the replacement piece encompassed all the play elements previously found on the removed play unit to create a sense of familiarity, whilst providing new and exciting opportunities to be discovered, exclusive to the site. This unique approach and attention to detail helped us to secure the project and continue our longstanding relationship with West Lothian Council.
By partnering with Playscapes Scotland, we could ensure a smooth install and the on-site construction of Beecraigs’ bespoke Badger Hide, crafted from FHS Robinia to create a piece like no other. And to add to the mesmerising visuals: a hand-carved badger provided by FHS which brings the area to life.

At every stage of the process our team reflected on what the site was and it’s importance to the local community. Aiming to provide something unique and fun for the space whilst incorporating its natural surroundings and needs of the community resulted in the creation of an outstanding play space with an undeniable buzz. By enhancing both the play and natural elements offered within the site, our team can be sure that the space will be enjoyed by all users for generations to come!
